Traditionally the Achilles tendon has been seen as a single tendon unit when assessed with ultrasound. Recent advances in anatomy now challenge that notion where the individual sural fascicles ñ medial and lateral gastrocnemius and the soleus tendons maintain their individual tendons down to their insertions on the calcaneum.
This presentation will describe the individual sural fascicles as seen on ultrasound and discuss why this is important in assessment of Achilles pain. The presentation will describe the normal appearance and the abnormal appearance of the Achilles fascicles.
